KB41866: "System Error 0x80004005 (2147500037): --- Unspecified error" error message appears when connecting to a clustered MicroStrategy Intelligence Server 9.x node after project duplication

This KB article provides a solution and best practice to an issue that may affect clustered environments after project duplications.

SYMPTOM:
After completing a project duplication via a 3-tier connection in a clustered Strategy Intelligence Server 9.4.x-10.x environment, the Intelligence Server node the duplication was not executed from becomes unresponsive and the following error is seen when attempting to add it to cluster:


System Error 0x80004005 (2147500037): --- Unspecified error <Server Name>

Note: In the above error message, the Intelligence Server name was replaced with <Server Name>

CAUSE:
In this instance an unsuccessful project duplication was causing unresponsiveness on the Intelligence Server node that the duplication was not initated from. This prevented nodeA from communicating to nodeB, which results in this non-descriptive error message being thrown.

ACTION:
To resolve this issue, the below steps were followed:

Shut down all intelligence servers in the cluster
From a 2-tier connection, delete the unsuccessfully duplicated project from the metadata
Re-configure both of Intelligence Servers with the existing Server definition and start all nodes in the cluster

WORKAROUND:
To prevent this type of behavior from being seen, it is advised to complete project duplication from a 2-tier project source as this alleviates any possible complications which may arise as a result of the Intelligence Server.
