KB41916: "Method '~' of object '~' failed" error message appears when adding attribute to group-by section of document in MicroStrategy 9.x and 10.x

"Method '~' of object '~' failed" error message appears when adding attribute to group-by section of document in MicroStrategy 9.x and 10.x

SYMPTOM:
When adding an attribute to group-by section of Document Editor, customer receives error message: "Method '~' of object '~' failed." Report without Group-By runs successfully and returns no error. The error message only occurs when any attribute is added to Group-By section.

"Method '~' of object '~' failed."

CAUSE:
One possible cause for this error message is that the attributes’ sorting was not saved correctly in the metadata.

ACTION:
1.     Edit the attribute in Desktop. This workaround uses the attribute "Artist." It does not matter which attribute you start with as these steps will need to be repeated for all attributes in the project.
2.     Click “Modify” on “CODE”

3.     Change both the “Report sort” and “Browse sort” to “None”, click “OK”.

4.     Go back to the attribute editor, click “Save and Close”.
5.     Repeat 1-4 for “Artist” attribute, but in step 3 change both “Report sort” and “Browse sort” to “Ascending”.
6.     Repeat 1-5 for “DESC” form of “Artist” attribute.
7.     Repeat 1-4 for all attribute forms in all other attributes.
8.     Update the schema.
