KB41956: Excel attachments sent through Distribution Services to Blackberry devices render as HTML Code in MicroStrategy 9.4.x-10.x, and lose formatting

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

When users receive Excel attachments through MicroStrategy Distribution Services 9.4.x-10.x and open them in Blackberry devices, the report/document loses formatting and renders as HTML Code

SYMPTOM:
When users receive Excel attachments through Strategy Distribution Services 9.4.x-10.x and open them in Blackberry devices, the report/document loses formatting and renders as HTML Code.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  • Create a report or document and set it up as an email subscription with Excel format
  • Create a Blackberry client email device and set it up correctly (follow technote KB35650: Blackberry clients need to switch the email format from HTML to plain text in order to see PDF attachments sent via MicroStrategy Distribution Services 9.0.x and how to change this behavior for reference-even though the technote is specific to PDF, it could provide guidance in setting up the Blackberry client)
  • Trigger the subscription from step 1 and send it to the Blackberry device
  • When opening the attachment in the Blackberry device, users will see that the formatting is lost, and the report/document is rendered as HTML code.

  •
Note: the issue does not happen with PDF format or if the subscription is retrieved in other clients, such as iPad, iPhone or Microsoft Outlook

CAUSE:
This is a known issue in Strategy 9.4.x-10.x, caused by the fact that Strategy generates XML, instead of Excel binary.

ACTION:
Strategy will continue to investigate and post updates as soon as they are available.
