KB42011: Jobs executing against Sybase terminate with the message "[Adaptive Server IQ]Connection was terminated" in MicroStrategy 9.x

Community Admin

• Strategy

SYMPTOM:
When using a Sybase database connection in Strategy 9.x, the following error message may appear and jobs will fail:

Sample Code/Error
QueryEngine encountered error: Execute Query failed.
Error type: Odbc error. Odbc operation attempted: SQLExecDirect. Connection was terminated Connection String: DSN=SYBASE_IQ;UID=mstr;.

These messages do not usually follow a specific action or change in the Strategy system.

CAUSE:
The error message displayed is being sent to Strategy from Sybase. The Sybase connections are either taking too long to execute or no longer accepting ODBC 3.x calls. In either case, the Sybase database is the source of the termination.

ACTION:
Consult the Sybase Database Administrators to determine the true cause of the terminated connections.

WORKAROUND:
Customers have reported that change the Sybase Database Instance to use ODBC 2.x calls may alleviate the issue:

  • Administration tree
  • Configuration Managers
  • Database Instances
  • Right click and "Edit" the Database Instance
  • Switch to the "Advanced Tab"

  • Change the ODBC Version to "Use 2.0 ODBC calls"
  • Click OK
  • Restart the Strategy Intelligence Server
