How to use multiple Running Sums in one report in MicroStrategy Developer

The following steps explain how to use multiple running sums within reports using Strategy Developer

  • Decide either metric or attribute (only one can be chosen) on which to sort.

This example, which uses the Vmall project, includes the Category field and the Dollar Sales, RunningSum of Dollar Sales and RunningSum of Unit Sales metrics and is sorted in descending order by the value of dollar sales.

  • Open each of the RunningSum metrics and right-click on the word 'RunningSum' as it appears in the Metric Definition window. The drop-down menu, as shown below, appears over the Metric Definition window.

  • Select 'RunningSum parameters' from the drop-down menu and the RunningSum Parameters window appears:

  •
In this window, users define the metric or attribute on which they wish to sort. In this example, 'Dollar Sales' is selected. The resulting report contains Dollar Sales, Running Sum of Dollar Sales and Running Sum of Unit Sales. The entire example report is sorted in decreasing order with the largest dollar sales first.

  • Ensure that all RunningSums metrics in the report are sorted, in either ascending or descending order, by the same metric or attribute.

The metric definition should appear as follows:

    RunningSum<SortBy= ( Desc) >()

The resulting report is shown below, with dollar sales displayed in descending order.
