"The Microsoft Jet database engine could not find the object ‘XXX’. " error message appears when running Freeform SQL report in MicroStrategy Desktop 9.2.1 against Microsoft Excel data source.

Report XXX
Status: Initialization Failed
Error: QueryEngine encountered error: Execute Query failed.
Error type: Odbc error. Odbc operation attempted: SQLExecDirect. The Microsoft Jet database engine could not find the object ‘XXX’. Make sure the object exists and that you spell its name and the path name correctly. Connection String: DSN=XXX; DBQ=YYY.

The following steps demonstrate how to reproduce this issue in tutorial project:

  1. Create an excel file "Test Excel Dataset.xls" with one worksheet "Year". Add two columns "Year_ID" and "Revenue" into the worksheet as shown below:

  • In a 2-tier tutorial project source, create a DSN against Test Excel Dataset.xls with "Microsoft Excel Driver (*.xls) " in Connectivity Wizard as shown below:

  • Create a new Database Instance with this DSN. Set the "Database connection type" as "Microsoft Excel 2000/2003" and Login as "admin" and blank password as shown below:

Select Year_ID from Year;

  • Add the Database Instance to Strategy Tutorial project in Project Configuration.
  • Create a Freeform SQL report with the Database Instance in Strategy Desktop with script as shown below:

  • Run the report and get error message as shown below:
ka04W000000OhSbQAK_0EM440000002JEp.png

CAUSE:

The cause for this issue is that no table named "Year" is created in the excel file and the Microsoft Jet database engine cannot find table object named "Year".

ACTION:

Create a table named "Year" by selecting all the columns and rows for the table including the column headers, and entering the name "Year" in the 'Name Box' and pressing enter, as shown below:
