KB42406: The vpd.properties file is replaced by mstrinstalls.xml for Unix/Linux installations in MicroStrategy 9.3.x and newer.

This article explains the purpose of mstrinstalls.xml introduced with MicroStrategy 9.3.x on Linux/UNIX

Starting in Strategy 9.3.0, a file called "mstrinstalls.xml" is created upon installing Strategy in a Unix/Linux environment. This file replaces the old vpd.properties file which was used in Strategy versions prior to 9.3.0. The mstrinstalls.xml file is created automatically in the $HOME folder of the user doing the installation. This file is used when users are installing a hotfix or uninstalling Strategy. The mstrinstalls.xml file contains information that allows the Intelligence Server to determine the default, Home, Install, and Log directories that were established during the original Strategy installation.
It is important to remember that the mstrinstalls.xml file is not created in the Home Directory of the Strategy installation. It is created in the $HOME folder of the user who performed the installation. When installing a hotfix, or uninstalling Strategy, the Installation Wizard will look in the installing user's home directory for the mstrinstalls.xml file. The following screenshot shows the mstrinstalls.xml file in the Home Directory of the user on a Linux machine. It is not inside the Strategy directory.
