KB42408: "Unable to find a valid MicroStrategy installations file (/home/mstrinstalls.xml)" error message appears when installing a MicroStrategy 9.3.0 Hotfix on a Linux/Unix machine

Article outline why the error "Unable to find a valid MicroStrategy installations file (<HOME>/mstrinstalls.xml). This file is required to install 9.3.0 Hotfix <Hotfix number>. The installation will terminate now." is returned when attempting to apply a hotfix on top of a Linux or Unix installation.

SYMPTOM:
After users install Strategy 9.3.0, when attempting to install a Strategy 9.3.0 Hotfix, they receive the error: "Unable to find a valid Strategy installations file (<HOME>/mstrinstalls.xml). This file is required to install 9.3.0 Hotfix <Hotfix number>. The installation will terminate now."
CAUSE:
This error occurs because a UNIX/Linux user other than the one who performed the original Strategy 9.3.0 installation is attempting to install the Hotfix. The mstrinstalls.xml file is automatically created at installation time in the Home Directory of the user performing the installation. When performing a Hotfix installation, the Strategy Intelligence Server will look for the mstrinstalls.xml file in the Home Directory of the user performing the Hotfix installation. Since the mstrinstalls.xml file is located in the Home Directory of a different user, the Intelligence Server will terminate the installation.
ACTION:
Ensure the same user is performing the installation of Strategy 9.3.0 and the Hotfix.
ADDITIONAL READING:
KB42406: The vpd.properties file is replaced by mstrinstalls.xml for Unix/Linux installations in Strategy 9.3.0
