"[Error occurred while starting the server instance.]" error message appears when using the Configuration Wizard in MicroStrategy 9.x and 10.x in UNIX/Linux environments after installing the supported KSH version.

SYMPTOM:

After installing the supported KSH version, when a user tries to configure the Intelligence Server using the Configuration Wizard in Strategy 9.x and 10.x running on a UNIX/Linux environment, the following error appears.

Error occurred while starting the server instance.

The DSSErrors.log shows the following error message.

2013-01-15 10:22:11.115-06:00 Find target process dead while sending a message
2013-01-15 10:22:11.119-06:00 Process Server returns error message: System Error (EPIPE): --- Broken pipe.

The MACfgWiz.xml log shows the following error.

CAUSE:
One possible cause is that more than one KSH is installed in the UNIX/Linux environment.

ACTION:
Uninstall other KSH versions from the Intelligence Server machine leaving behind only the version that is supported in Strategy 9.x. Refer to the following Strategy KnowledgeBase Technical Note information on the the supported KSH version in Strategy 9.x and 10.x:
