WideCharToUTF8 conversion failure error message appears when running a report in MicroStrategy Intelligence Server against an Oracle database

SYMPTOM:
When running a report that contains only attributes from 3-tier (in Strategy Desktop 9.x) against an Oracle database, the following error message appears:


Status: Execution failed
Error: SQL Generation CompleteQueryExecution ComppleAnalytical Engine Execution CompleteException occured while writing data into the stream: WideCharToUTF8 conversion failure. Exception occured while writing data into the stream: WideCharToUTF8 conversion failure. Error in Process method of Component. ReportNetServer, Project xxx, Job xxx Error Code=-2147213424. Exception occured while writing data into the stream: WideCharToUTF8 conversion failure.

When running the report from Strategy Web, the following error message appears:


Exception occurred while writing data into the stream: %1

The report runs fine from 2-tier Strategy Desktop.

CAUSE:
The cause of the issue is "Character Set Encoding" setting under Database Connections is UTF-8.

ACTION:
Right-click on the Database Instance > Edit, and click on Modify > Advanced (tab) and select "Non UTF-8" or "UCS-2" depend on your ODBC version as shown below:
