KB4275: How to retrieve attribute form expressions using MicroStrategy Intelligence Server SDK 10.x

Community Admin

• Strategy

Multiple form expressions for the same attribute can be defined in the Strategy Product Suite. This functionality allows different column names to exist for the same attribute from different warehouse tables, offering flexibility for schema creation and maintenance.

For example, the following two expressions:

  • DATE_ID
  • ORDER_DATE

are defined for the same attribute ('Date') form ('ID').

However, there is only one expression available from the IDSSAttribute interface. In this case, if the following call is made:

IDSSAttribute.Definition.BaseForms.Item(0).Expression.Text

For attribute 'DATE' only 'DATE_ID' is returned.
To retrieve other available expressions, incorporate IDSSTable interfaces in the search. Due to the optimization design for Strategy Engine performance, attribute form expressions are stored within each source table to which the attribute applies. As shown above, the expression 'ORDER_DATE' can be obtained from tables 'ORDER_DETAIL', 'ORDER_FACT' and 'RUSH_ORDER'.

The following search is necessary to retrieve all tables used by one attribute:

Set oSearch = mobjObjSource.NewObject(DSSTypeSearch)
oSearch.Clear
oSearch.Types.Add DssTypeTable
oSearch.Uses.Add dateAttr.Info
Set oResult = mobjObjSource.ExecuteSearch(oSearch)

The IDSSBaseAttributeForm::Table method cannot return all tables in this situation. Once the specific table (folder) is acquired, use the following to retrieve the expected expression:

Set oAttributeInfo = aTable.AttributeInfos.Item(i)
oAttributeInfo.Item(0).Expression.Text

NOTE: The '(i)' refers to the desired attribute index within the same table.
This contains:

  1. The expression from the .LocalDefn.BaseForms collection if there is something overwriten at the table level (IDSSTable);
  2. Otherwise, the default information from the attribute (IDSSAttribute)
