This knowledge base article describes the error message "Attribute Form object 'ID' (ID: XXX) cannot be deleted because other objects depend on it." that appears when upgrading the metadata in MicroStrategy Configuration Wizard 9.x and 10.x

SYMPTOM:
While upgrading a 9.x metadata to any higher version within the Strategy Configuration Wizard the error message below is received.

Sample code/error:

Attribute Form object 'ID' (ID: XXX) cannot be deleted because other objects depend on it.
Attribute Form object 'DESC' (ID: XXX) cannot be deleted because other objects depend on it.  Objects of type Folder cannot be managed.
An unrecoverable error occurred during update.

NOTE:  In this instance the important aspect of the error message relevant to the root cause was "Objects of type Folder cannot be managed" found about midway down the error message.

CAUSE:

In this instance the project folder object has become a managed object and been placed in the Managed Objects folder.  This is not expected as the project folder object should not have a parent folder.  It is unclear how this occurred.

One way to confirm this is the issue being faced is to right click any object within the problematic project and go to its Properties.  Within the properties, check the Location and see if it begins with "Managed Objects" as seen below.
