KB42848: “The setup routine cannot recover from this error: File name: Z:\InstallMaster\Win64\Hotfix\Hotfix\Script Files\MAProducts.rul. The setup routine will now terminate” when running any MicroStrategy 9.x or 10.x Hot Fix setup in Windows based OS.

This KB addresses an error seen when installing 9.x or 10.x Hotfix in Windows OS.

SYMPTOM:
The following error message is faced when installing Strategy 9.x Hot Fix versions in Windows based systems:

The setup routine cannot recover from this error: File name: Z:\InstallMaster\Win64\Hotfix\Hotfix\Script Files\MAProducts.rul. The setup routine will now terminate

In this case, the user is part of the Domain Administrators group, and has granted permissions on the %TEMP% folder as well as most of the administrator permissions in Windows. The base Strategy version is installed, activated, fully functioning and no problem has been reported.

CAUSE:
This issue occurs because the referred user who is a Domain User is not part of the Local Administrators group. To confirm this scenario, launch the Command Prompt and execute the command net localgroup administrators, as shown:

If the domain user is not listed, in this case DOMAIN\user1 and/or the group to which he belongs is not part of the Local Administrators group, the referred user hasn't permissions as local administrator, which will cause this operation to fail with the message received.

ACTION:
Contact the Active Directory administrator to request the addition of the referred Domain User to the Local Administrators group.

NOTE:
Sometimes, the Local Administrators are part of the Domain Administrators group, but the Domain Administrators are not part of the Local Administrators group.
