When users attempt to perform a repair installation on an existing MicroStrategy 9.x installation or when installing a hotfix over an existing installation on an AIX operating system an error appears. This article explains a potential root cause and steps how to resolve the issue.

SYMPTOM
When users attempt to perform a repair installation on an existing Strategy 9.x installation or when installing a hotfix over an existing installation on an AIX operating system, the following error message is received:

An error has occurred while performing the specified operation.
To preserve integrity, Strategy Installer will attempt to perform a rollback.
Strategy Installer is cancelling the requested operation. Please wait.
Strategy Installer encountered errors before Strategy 9 could be completely installed.
For more information on the errors, review the installation log file (<home_path>/MicroStrategy/log/install.log).
Strategy Installer was not able to undo the install operations performed.
The selected installation is now in a corrupted state.
To restore the consistency of the installation, it is strongly recommended to run a(n) Repair operation before attempting to use it.
To run the Repair operation now, enter the corresponding value.

Entries similar to the following are seen in the install log.

CAUSE
One possible cause is that the library libM8Crypto.a is being by a different processes, thus cannot be opened or removed.

ACTION
Follow the steps below to resolve this issue. In some situations, this issue may be resolved with steps 1 and 2, while in other situations, all three steps are required.

  1. Execute the slibclean command, to remove unused kernel & library memory modules. (using root account)

    # /usr/sbin/slibclean

  2. Find the Strategy process ID and kill the process that locked the file. (using root account)

    # ps -ef | grep Strategy
    # kill <Process-ID>

Note: Sometimes a process being idle or dead can not be killed by this kill command. In this situation, it is necessary to add a signal 9, forcing to kill this process.

    # kill -9 <Process-ID>

  3. Rename the lib files mentioned in the error message. Sometimes this issue is caused by more than one library file, for simplicity, the user can just rename the whole lib folder, then create an empty folder and name it as "lib". (using the account that performed the previous installation)
