KB43110: "An invalid XML character (Unicode: 0x{2}) was found in the value of attribute "{1}" and element is "1b"" error message appears when trying to configure the Intelligence Server on Red Hat 6.x with the metadata on PostgreSQL 9.1.3 in MicroStrategy

This KB addresses an error seen when attempting to configure the Intelligence Server to point to newly created metadata tables in a PostgreSQL database in Linux.

SYMPTOM:
When attempting to configure the Intelligence Server to point to newly created metadata tables in a PostgreSQL database in Linux without a GUI, the user encounters the following error in Strategy 9.4.x and 10.x:

Fatal Error] :7:12: An invalid XML character (Unicode: 0x{2}) was found in the value of attribute "{1}" and element is "1b".
Error obtaining the server instance.: An invalid XML character (Unicode: 0x{2}) was found in the value of attribute "{1}" and element is "1b".

This occurs after the user has attempted to connect to the metadata using the Strategy Login and Password in the Configuration Wizard. The user is then unable to proceed with the configuration. The same error is seen the MACfgWiz.xml file.

CAUSE:
This error is likely caused because the user's environment is not configured properly with the correct operating system packages. Several operating system packages are required for the Strategy Intelligence Server 9.x to work properly on Red Hat Linux Enterprise Server 6.x

ACTION:
Ensure that all of the correct operating system packages have been installed on the environment where the Intelligence Server is installed.

WORKAROUND:
The user may need to configure a fresh environment and try to install the Intelligence Server. The root of the issue is that the current environment has become corrupted or is missing important operating system packages. In some instances the user found that they had trouble finding the exact cause, but the issue was fixed by installing the Intelligence Server on a fresh environment.
