KB43239: What is the difference between MicroStrategy Platform release and Feature release?

Community Admin

• Strategy

From MicroStrategy Version 10, the company has moved to a quarterly release cadence. For now, we have two types of releases – Platform releases and Feature releases. This KB show the difference between these two types of releases.

  • Why we have implemented these changes?

This pro-active change has enabled us to provide innovative improvements, feature enhancements, and quick-fixes in an agile fashion to better support you, our valued customer. The shortened release cycle has made it easier to address customer needs more quickly to optimize your investment. We do understand that it can be challenging for some customers to keep up with this prompt pace and determine when the best time to upgrade to a newer version of Strategy for their enterprise. Therefore, we created two types of releases to meet this need – Platform releases and Feature releases.
          1. What is a "Platform" release?
Strategy considers a “platform” release one that is well-suited for broad-based customer adoption. We anticipate platform releases will be delivered approximately every 18 months and will be supported for a total of 36 months. We will make regular stability patches and hotfixes to a platform release, but no new features or functionality will be added to this specific version.
PLATFORM RELEASE
Which versions: 9.4.1 and 10.4
The time interval: Every 18 months.
For who: Entire customer base.
For what purpose: Focus on production level security, stability, and performance defect fixes for all customers.
What is the expectation: Customer has chosen platform path and wants product stability without new enhancements?
How we support the version: Three years, patches for approved P1 defects, and regular hot fix cadence addresses critical defects.
          2. What is a "Feature" release?
We expect feature releases to be delivered every three months and will be supported for a total of six months (Troubleshooting support available for 18 months from the original release date). Feature releases will include new features and functionalities, as well as patches and hotfixes from the most recent platform release. This type of release is designed for specific feature requirements for those customers who want to gain access to the latest features and functionality, and are willing to embrace the added commitment of frequent upgrades. For example, Strategy version 10.4 is a platform release, and customers can expect versions 10.5, 10.6, etc. to be feature releases until our next platform release is delivered.
FEATURE RELEASE
Which versions: 10.5, 10.6, 10.7,10.8, 10.9,.10.10
The time interval: Every three months.
For who: Customers with specific feature requirements.
For what purpose: New functionality developed in close collaboration with customers and customer council.
What is the expectation: Customer has chosen feature path, will consume further feature releases.
How we support the version: Six months (troubleshooting, patches for approved P1 defects - Troubleshooting support available for 18 months from the original release date). Customers upgrade to next feature release for roll-up fixes.
