KB43311: When drilling to Template from the Custom Group header, all the attribute elements are displayed in the target template report even some elements are not in the custom group in MicroStrategy Developer 9.4.x-10.x

When drilling to Template from the Custom Group header, all the attribute elements are displayed in the target template report even some elements are not in the custom group in MicroStrategy Developer 9.4.x-10.x

SYMPTOM:
When drilling to Template from the Custom Group header, all the attribute elements are displayed in the target template report even some elements are not in the custom group in Strategy Developer 9.4.x-10.x
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  • In Strategy Developer 9.4.x-10.x, create a Custom Group object with two elements: one is Books, and another is Movies, as shown below:

  • Create a source report, with Custom Group object in row, and metric Revenue in column. Save the report with name "R_source".
  • Create a template, with attribute Category in row, and metric Revenue in column. Save the template with name "target_template".
  • Create a Drill Map object.
    • Drag and drop the report "R_source" into the Origin window.
    • Select the Custom Group object
    • Select the template "target_template" object in the Template window.
    • Save and close the drill map, as shown below:

  • Run the report. Right mouse click on the custom group header, and select Drill -> To template -> target_template, as shown below:

  • In the new report, all the attribute elements are displayed, even elements 'Electronics' and 'Music' are not in the Custom Group, as shown below:

CAUSE:
This symptom is by design. When drilling from Custom Group header, no attribute filter is generated (the report filter of the source report will be transferred if there is any). As a result, all the attribute elements are displayed, as shown below:

WORKAROUND:
If only the elements in the Custom Group are required to be displayed in the target report, hold on Ctrl key and select both of the custom group elements, and drill to template as shown below:

And the attribute filter will be transferred to the target report, as shown below:
