How to construct a URL API to run a Report Services document and set a specific selection for a Grid or Graph selector control in MicroStrategy Web 9.4.1

Description:

It is possible to set Grid or Graph selectors to a specific value using URL API when running the target document. For explanation on the URL parameters required and for steps to construct a URL for selector controls other than grids or graphs, refer to the following technical note:

TN39871 - How to construct URL API to run a Report Services document with different default selection for attribute element selector in MicroStrategy Web 9.2.1?

Pre-requisite:

In order to perform the steps, it is required to use Fiddler. Please see technical note KB20064 - How to install and use Fiddler for MicroStrategy Web troubleshooting for information on how to setup Fiddler on a client machine.

Instructions:

  • Run the target document and change the selected attribute element in the Grid Selector. I.e. here from 2009 to 2010:

  • Changing the selected element generates a HTTP request that is logged with Fiddler:

  • Using the Fiddler inspector, this HTTP request needs to be further checked to get the ctlKey used for the event. To do so, on the right-hand side select Inspectors > WebForms and under Body find the events parameter as seen on the screenshot:

  • Looking at the events parameter value, we can see the parameters we need for our URL to construct:

  • Here, the ctlKey parameter required is “F46” and the elemList “h2011;8D679D5111D3E4981000E787EC6DE8A4”. In the following, we can proceed to build the final URL as per KB39871 in the usual way.
