KB43711: An undo package cannot be created for an Object Manager package made through the Project Merge utility from a command line in MicroStrategy 9.4.x - 10.x due to the error "Can't create undo package file for "path"

This technical note outlines an issue with MicroStrategy Object Manager, where undo packages cannot be created through Project Merge and from the command line.

SYMPTOM:
The error below is seen when trying to create an undo package for an Object Manager package created off a container through the Project Merge command line.

Can't create undo package file for "path", because it contains keep-both conflict rules

This doesn't happen if the package is created not off a container directly through Object Manager.
CAUSE:
This is caused by a known issue in Strategy 9.4.x - 10.x. When creating the XML file for a container package, Object Manager uses the keep both rule instead of the rule set in Object Manager preferences.

ACTION:
Strategy will continue to investigate and post updates as soon as they are available.

WORKAROUND:
To get around this the xml file that Object Manager creates for the container package must be manually modified. Any entry in the rules section must be modified from Keep Both to either Use Existing or replace. An example of the section that must be modified is below.

  <Rules>
    <Operations>
      <CategoryLevel>
        <Application>
          <keepboth />
        </Application>
        <Configuration>
          <keepboth />
        </Configuration>
        <Schema>
          <keepboth />
        </Schema>
      </CategoryLevel>
    </Operations>
    <Options>
      <Option>
        <ID>ACL</ID>
        <UseExisting />
      </Option>
      <Option>
        <ID>ACL</ID>
        <UseExisting />
      </Option>
      <Option>
        <ID>UpdateSchema</ID>
        <SchemaUpdateNone />
      </Option>
      <Option>
        <ID>OMOnOffSettings</ID>
        <None />
      </Option>
    </Options>
  </Rules>
