"Published cube XXXXX (size xxxxx) cannot be loaded because total cube memory usage reaches maximum setting (50480M)." error message is displayed when running cube-based reports on MicroStrategy Intelligence Server.

SYMPTOM
When running cube-based reports on Strategy Intelligence Server 10.x, following error message is displayed:

ka04W00000148qBQAQ_0EM440000002SRd.png

Sample Code/Error

(Published cube XXXXX (size xxxxx) cannot be loaded because total cube memory usage reaches maximum setting (50480M). Increase the memory available for cubes for project XXXXX in order to load this cube. Error in Process method of Component: CubeServer, XXXXX, Job xxxxx, Error Code= -2147072551)

It is seen that the cube is published and listed on the Strategy cube monitor.
CAUSE
The Intelligent Cube will be published even if the size of the cube exceeds the governing setting 'Maximum RAM usage' (under Project Configuration > Intelligent Cubes). If the size of the cube is greater than this setting, the cube cannot be loaded into memory. This situation may be seen in two possible scenarios:

  1. When the memory required to load a cube is not available (i.e. the ‘Maximum RAM usage’ has been reached or will be surpassed with the new cube load), the Intelligence Server publishes the cube, but does not load it into memory. This is true because the Intelligence Server cannot even swap an existing cube out of memory to load this newly published cube. For example, if the RAM for cube are set as 256MB and the cube being published is 500MB in size, the Intelligence Server just publishes the cube, but cannot load into memory. Even when manually trying to load the cube, an error message will be displayed.
  2. In addition,  a cube size gradually grows with usage as indexes are built. It is possible that the cube size increases and the cube is now bigger than what is defined by the ‘Maximum RAM usage’ parameter. For example, when publishing the cube, its size is 200MB. However, with usage, the cube size gradually goes up to 300MB as indexes are built. If the ‘Maximum RAM usage’ for cubes is only 256MB, in this case also, the cube can automatically get unloaded and users receive this error.

ACTION
Increase the value of the parameter Project Configuration > Intelligent Cubes > ‘Maximum RAM usage (MBytes)’ , shown in the image below:
