KB438449: The difference between the Team and Department editions of MicroStrategy on AWS

Use cases and the architectural components of the Team and Department editions

Strategy on AWS is a powerful enterprise analytics and mobility platform that allows you to quickly and easily deploy and manage the entire Strategy platform directly into your Amazon Web Services (AWS) account. You can quickly deploy a completely configured Strategy environment using a simple and intuitive web-based deployment manager. Two of the available pre-configured editions are Team and Department.

Team Edition
The Strategy on AWS Team edition offers an all-in-one system designed for team application development and sharing. All the servers along with the metadata are on a single instance. Because it has the simplest architecture and is the lowest cost configuration option, a Team edition is an excellent starting point for users new to Strategy Cloud.
Both editions provide you the option to add the Developer instance, thereby giving you access to Strategy Developer for data modeling and administration purposes.
The Team edition consists of the following components:

  • Strategy Intelligence Server running on a Linux machine
  • Strategy Developer running on Windows Server (optional)
  • Strategy Web
  • Metadata hosted on a Linux machine

In the Team edition, all resources reside in a single availability zone in the virtual private cloud created by the infrastructure stack. The Linux Intelligence Server and the optional Windows Developer machines reside within a private subnet within the Availability zone, while the AWS Elastic Load Balancer (ELB) resides within a public subnet within the Availability zone.
Department Edition
The Strategy on AWS Department edition is designed to cover the main requirements of small businesses or departments within large corporations. It leverages the full power of the Strategy platform while keeping the heart of the system (the metadata repository) on its own dedicated resources.
In addition to all the enterprise analytics capabilities available in the Team edition, the Department edition provides a standalone metadata database on AWS Relational Database Service (RDS) to support higher performance and scalability.
The Department edition consists of the following components:

  • Strategy Intelligence Server running on a Linux machine
  • Strategy Developer running on Windows Server (optional)
  • Strategy Web
  • Metadata hosted on the AWS RDS

Both editions provide you the option to add the Developer instance, thereby giving you access  to Strategy Developer for data modeling and administration purposes. In addition, both editions provide web remote desktop protocol (RDP) and Secure Shell (SSH) access to the Linux and Windows machines.
Take the Administration for MicroStrategy Cloud (10.312) class to learn more about the different Strategy on AWS environment editions.
