KB438617: Memory usage of PDF Exporter java process on Windows machine increases without a limit in MicroStrategy Secure Enterprise 10.7

Heather Brewster

Senior Manager, Technical Support • MicroStrategy

SYMPTOM
It may be observed that the memory utilization of the PDF Exporter process increases beyond the default memory limit in Strategy Secure Enterprise 10.7. The intended default memory limit for this process is 1GB based on the registry entry for AppParameters.
The memory utilization of the PDF Exporter java process can be monitored using Windows Task Manager; there are four java processes that are components of Strategy Secure Enterprise 10.7.

In order to determine which java process is the PDFExporter, click 'View' > 'Select Columns' in Task Manager and make sure that 'Command Line' is one of the visible columns. The PDF Exporter can be identified by locating the java process containing the following command line:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\MicroStrategy\JRE\180_77\Win64\bin\java.exe" -Djava.library.path="C:\Program Files (x86)\MicroStrategy\Intelligence Server\AdobeSDK" -cp "C:\Program Files (x86)\MicroStrategy\Intelligence Server\PDFExportService\PDFExporte

CAUSE
The default memory limit value of the PDF Exporter is set incorrectly in Strategy Secure Enterprise 10.7.
ACTION
Starting with Strategy Secure Enterprise 10.8, it is possible to configure properties for the exporting engine by modifying a configuration file.
To address this issue in Strategy Secure Enterprise 10.7, the following steps should be implemented.
1. Navigate to the following registry key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\MSTR_PDFExport\Parameters]
2. Right-click to modify the "AppParameters" entry.
3. The current value for this entry should be set as the following: (assuming an installation in the default location)

-Djava.library.path="C:\Program Files (x86)\MicroStrategy\Intelligence Server\AdobeSDK" -cp "C:\Program Files (x86)\MicroStrategy\Intelligence Server\PDFExportService\PDFExporterService.jar;C:\Program Files (x86)\MicroStrategy\Intelligence Server\AdobeSDK\com.datalogics.PDFL.jar" org.springframework.boot.loader.JarLauncher -Xms512m -Xmx1024m --spring.config.location="C:\Program Files (x86)\MicroStrategy\Intelligence Server\PDFExportService\application.properties"

4. This value should be changed to the following instead. The Xmx is the maximum memory limit and the Xms is the minimum. The memory usage of the PDF Exporter will now be limited to 1024MB which is the default value.

-Xms512m -Xmx1024m -Djava.library.path="C:\Program Files (x86)\MicroStrategy\Intelligence Server\AdobeSDK" -cp "C:\Program Files (x86)\MicroStrategy\Intelligence Server\PDFExportService\PDFExporterService.jar;C:\Program Files (x86)\MicroStrategy\Intelligence Server\AdobeSDK\com.datalogics.PDFL.jar" org.springframework.boot.loader.JarLauncher --spring.config.location="C:\Program Files (x86)\MicroStrategy\Intelligence Server\PDFExportService\application.properties"

5. Restart the PDF Exporter service for this change to take effect.

WARNING:
Modifying registry values incorrectly may cause serious, system-wide problems that may require the re-installation of Microsoft Windows NT. Any edit of the registry is done at the user's own risk. Since these are user-initiated changes, they are not covered by any Strategy warranty. If using Microsoft Windows NT, the user should back up the registry and/or update an Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) prior to alterations.
