The 10.9 MicroStrategy Library icon may not show up correctly on IE11

Jun Zhu

Product Owner, Principal • MicroStrategy

This is a 10.9 cosmetic defect where the MicroStrategy Library icon does not show up properly under Internet Explorer 11 but works fine on Chrome.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

Description

In Strategy Library 10.9, you may be unable to see the Library icon when using Internet Explorer 11. Howver, the Library icon does appear on Google Chrome.

Steps to Reproduce

  • Install Strategy 10.9.
  • Open Strategy Library in IE 11. Notice that the Library icon does not appear on the log in page.
  • Open Strategy Library in Google Chrome. Notice that the Library icon appears.

Why is this happening?

This error is related to Window's Group Policy setting called Untrusted Font Blocking, which was introduced in the first release of Windows 10.
At the beginning, this setting was enabled by default because Microsoft considered it to be a powerful mitigation against attacks on GDI's font logic. However, this setting also introduced a separate, always-on mitigation against GDI font-rendering bugs and caused several icon errors, like this one, in Microsoft's own products.
As of Windows 10 v1703, Microsoft has changed the setting's default to disabled. For earlier OS, you must manually disable this setting and modify the security and accessibility settings of IE 11.

Solution

Modify Windows OS security features to disable Untrusted Font Blocking:

  1. Open the Group Policy Management Editor (gpedit.msc).
  2. Go to Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administration Templates > System.
  3. Open Mitigation Options.
  4. Open the Untrusted Font Blocking setting and select Not Configured.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Reboot the system.
  7. Open the Registry Editor(regedit.exe) and go to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Kernel\.
  8. If the MitigationOption key is not there, right-click and add a new QWORD (64-bit) Value and name it MitigationOptions.
  9. Enter 2000000000000 to turn this feature off.
  10. Reboot the system.

Modify IE 11 Security Setting to enable Allow Font Download:

  1. Go to Internet Explorer > Internet Options.
  2. Choose Security > Internet and/or Intranet. Internet or Intranet specification will depend on your connection
  3. Go to Font Download and ensure it is set to Enabled.

Modify IE 11 Accessibility Settings to allow font styles specified on web pages:

  1. Go to Internet Explorer > Internet Options.
  2. Under the General tab, click Accessibility.
  3. Ensure Ignore font styles specified on web pages is de-selected.
  4. Click OK.
