KB439966: "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: GC overhead limit exceeded" error occurs when executing a report against MongoDB in MicroStrategy Secure Enterprise 10.x

This article describes an issue in which a report execution against MongoDB fails due to the error "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: GC overhead limit exceeded". The article explains the root cause and the action to take.

SYMPTOMS
When executing a report against MongoDB in Strategy Developer/Web 10.x, the report execution fails and the following error is captured in the DSSErrors.log.


[Database Classes][Error] Execute Query failed. 
Error type: Odbc error. Odbc operation attempted: SQLExecDirect. [HY000:-460: on SQLHANDLE] 
[Strategy][ODBC MongoDB driver][MongoDB]java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: GC overhead limit exceeded 
Connection String: DRIVER=Strategy ODBC Driver for MongoDB;

CAUSE
The default or specified heap size used by the JVM is not sufficient to fulfill the query execution.
ACTION
Increase the heap size through the JVM Arguments.

1) DSN
Under the corresponding DSN, modify the value of the JVM Arguments (SQL Engine tab -> Edit Server Settings -> JVM Arguments)

2) DSN-less connection
The attribute JVMArgs with a desired value needs to be added to the connection string. In order to specify the heap to 2048MB, for example, add below to the connection string.
JVMArgs={-Xmx2048m};
