SYMPTOM
In some cases, the Strategy Enterprise Manager data load process may take longer than desired due to an optional database-side statistics update. The time effect of this update can be determined by checking the MAEntMgr.xml log file, the primary log file for the data load, for the following messages regarding the Upd_Stat_Table_Stats_SQL.sql script execution:
2017-10-26 21:00:24.056+00:00 [Logger:MAEntMgr][Thread:pool-1-thread-1][Level:INFO] Executing C:\Program Files (x86)\MicroStrategy\Enterprise Manager\Scripts\Upd_Stat_Table_Stats_SQL.sql on MSTR_Stats
2017-10-26 23:15:03.942+00:00 [Logger:MAEntMgr][Thread:pool-1-thread-1][Level:INFO] Finished executing C:\Program Files (x86)\MicroStrategy\Enterprise Manager\Scripts\Upd_Stat_Table_Stats_SQL.sql on MSTR_Stats
The time gap between the "Executing" and "Finished executing" messages for the Upd_Stat_Table_Stats_SQL.sql script above indicates that the script took two hours to execute. In this case, disabling this update by turning off the UPDATESTATS parameter on the data load may significantly decrease the data load time.
CAUSEThe UPDATESTATS option is a parameter that tells the data load to update database-side statistics, NOT Strategy usage statistics. Therefore, it is not strictly necessary for full Enterprise Manager functionality. In some cases, this database statistics update has been observed to take several hours, even longer than the actual data load of Strategy usage data.
(Note that is not the only possible cause of a slow data load issue, as many factors affect the speed of a data load including data volume, load frequency, network latency, and database performance.)
ACTIONSince the UPDATESTATS option is not necessary for Enterprise Manager functionality, the option can be removed by creating a new data load with the CREATE DATA LOAD script or using the ALTER DATA LOAD script to modify the existing data load.
These scripts can be found in Command Manager outlines. To take advantage of the workaround, make sure to NOT enable the UPDATESTATS option on the new/modified data load.
