KB440335:PayPal certified as a new Data Source for MicroStrategy Secure Enterprise 10.11

Justin Parks

Principal Product Specialist • MicroStrategy

The following knowledge base article documents the certification of PayPal as a new data source in MicroStrategy Secure Enterprise 10.11

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

Introduction

PayPal is an online payment system that supports online money transfer, invoice sending and receiving, payment transaction etc. Starting with Strategy Secure Enterprise 10.11, the PayPal JDBC connector is shipped in order to establish a connection to PayPal as data source when doing data import on Web and Workstation.

Feature Supported:

  • Data Retrieve Mode: JDBC Call Only
  • Data Import supported: Select Tables, Free Form SQL, Query Builder(In-memory)

Rate Limitation

PayPal data would be accessed by making API calls from client and it is necessary and secure to know the rate limit of PayPal API call. If the usage reaches the limitation, the request will return a 429 response to protect the server. While PayPal hasn’t published any specific rate limiting policy, they are based on traffic patterns. Traffic is constantly evaluated to determine if rate limitations should be applied.
Refer to the following link for additional documentation:
https://developer.paypal.com/docs/rate-limiting/

JDBC Connection URL:

  1. Using OAuth 2.0 authentication client ID and client secret:

    JDBC;DRIVER={com.simba.paypal.jdbc42.CLJDBCDriver};URL={jdbc:paypal://;host=[host];port=[port];Auth_Client_ID=[Client_ID];
    Auth_Client_Secret=[Client_secret];Auth_Type=OAuth 2.0}

  2. Using access token

    JDBC;DRIVER={com.simba.paypal.jdbc42.CLJDBCDriver};URL={jdbc:paypal://;host=[host];port=[port];Auth_Type=OAuth 2.0;Auth_AccessToken=[Access_Token]}

JDBC Schema Tables:

PayPal stores data in structures which do not follow the rules of traditional tables and columns. The JDBC connector maps PayPal data into its designed relational schema with multiple fixed schema tables. This mapping method is complicated so lower performance is expected when querying tables with large amount of data.
Select Table List Example:

Configure PayPal using JDBC on Web and Workstation:

  • Click Add External Data.

  • Search ‘PayPal’ data source.

  • Choose Select Tables, Type a Query or Build a Query to import data.

Note: It is recommend to use Select Tables to reduce joins on the driver side for performance reason.

  • In the Data Source interface, select DSN-less Data Source and choose ‘PayPal’ for both Database and Version.
    • Access Token: Fill in the required field Host Name, Port Number and Access Token.

  • Standard Access: Fill in the required field Host Name, Port Number, Client ID, Client Secret.

  • Edit the connection string: Users can click Show connection string and select Edit connection string. Users can manually fill in connection information for the JDBC connector or add additional parameters.

  • Type any character(s) on the username and password fields as they will not be used in establishing the connection, but the fields are required.
  • Give a name to the data source connection you create on Data Source Name field.
  • Using the above create data source, users will now be able to import data.

In-Memory Data Import:

After creating and connecting to the PayPal data source, users can start to retrieve data through the JDBC connection and then publish a Data Import cube for dossiers, reports and documents to run off.
Take Select Tables as an example:

  • Click the PayPal data source that was just created and after the connection users can pick up tables to the right side for reports later.

  • Click Prepare Data to do data wrangle or column rename action.
  • Click Finish and select Import as an In-memory Dataset Mode to publish the cube.
