How to Configure HTTPS for MicroStrategy Workstation 10.x When Using a Self-Signed Certificate

Darren Burns

Senior Cloud Support Engineer III • MicroStrategy

Within MicroStrategy Workstation 10.x, some of our users have been experiencing trouble configuring HTTPS. When using Self-Signed Certificates, many users will receive an error message that reads, "An error occurred while sending the request. The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel." This article is intended as a guide on how to configure HTTPS for MicroStrategy Workstation 10.x.

Description

Within Strategy Workstation 10.x, some of our users have been experiencing trouble configuring HTTPS. When using Self-Signed Certificates, many users will receive an error message that reads, "An error occurred while sending the request. The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel." When connecting to Strategy Library 10.x using Strategy Workstation 10.x, and then attempting to connect to an environment using an HTTPS connection, the user will view the following image located below:

Why is this happening?
This is working as designed in Strategy Web. Strategy Workstation requires that a valid, trusted SSL Certificate is installed on the local machine as well as configured in the cacert.pem file by copying over the contents of the certificate into the .pem file, default location “C:\Program Files\Strategy\Workstation\cacert.pem”.
Solution

  1. The KB article below details the steps to retrieve the certificate and copy the certificate details into the cacert.pem file:
    1. How to Configure HTTPS for MicroStrategy Analytics Desktop 10.x When Using a Self-Signed Certificate
  2. Install the Certificate on the Local Machine to the Trusted Root Certification Authorities-Certificates. The link below steps through installing certificates there:
    1. Installing a Self-Signed Certificate as a Trusted Root CA
  3. Once the contents of the certificate have been copied over the cacert.pem and the certificate has been installed on the local machine, the error should no longer appear when trying to the connect to the Strategy Library Environment.
  4. The user will then be prompted for login credentials to log in to the environment.
