KB440698: Unable to pass credentials for Web Server login when establishing connection for use with MicroStrategy Analytics Desktop 10.8.

This Knowledge Base article describes how some users unable to connect to vi.overstock.com environment from the Analytics Desktop tool and the workarounds to login

SYMPTOM
Using the Analytics Desktop tool after 10.8 some may find that at the Login page for the Web Server takes credentials, but after clicking OK, the same login page refreshes.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
TEST 1 Steps to reproduce: 
1. Make sure in Strategy Web admin page, the option “Show all the projects connected to the Web Server before the user logs in” is selected in Default properties under Login section 
2. Open Desktop 10.8 
3. Go to File -> Preferences and set the Server URL to point to a 10.8 ASP Strategy web using IP ADDRESS 
4. Click on the test and save changes. You should see a message saying “xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx has been saved successfully” 
5. Click ok 
6. Go to server option from the menu and select any of the options. For this test use “Import Dashboard” 
7. You will see a pop-up window asking you to select the project. You will be able to select Strategy Tutorial, select standard authentication and type in the credentials and it will work just fine.

TEST 2 Steps to reproduce: 
1. Make sure in Strategy Web admin page, the option “Log in, then show the projects accessible by the supplied login” is selected in Default properties under Login section 
2. Open Desktop 10.8 
3. Go to File -> Preferences and set the Server URL to point to a 10.8 ASP Strategy web using IP ADDRESS 
4. Click on the test and save changes. You should see a message saying “xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx has been saved successfully” 
5. Click ok 
6. Go to server option from the menu and select any of the options. For this test use “Import Dashboard” 
7. You will see a pop-up window asking you type in your credentials. We tried to use Strategy Web Admin credentials and Strategy credentials, and none of them work.

TEST 3 Steps to reproduce: 
1. Make sure in Strategy Web admin page, the option “Show all the projects connected to the Web Server before the user logs in” is selected in Default properties under Login section 
2. Open Desktop 10.8 
3. Go to File -> Preferences and set the Server URL to point to a 10.8 ASP Strategy web using WEB SERVER name 
4. Click on the test and save changes. You should see a message saying “<Web server name> has been saved successfully” 
5. Click ok 
6. Go to server option from the menu and select any of the options. For this test use “Import Dashboard” 
7. You will see a pop-up window asking you type in your credentials. Using both the Strategy Web Admin credentials and Strategy credentials  do not work. 
8. See video named “NOT working with webserver name Show all projects 10_8.wmv” 
ACTION
This issue has been addressed in 10.10. Upgrade to this version to take advantage of this fix where 10.10 Desktop was changed so that the connection that used web server to Restful Server.
WORKAROUND 
1. Go to your 10.8 Strategy Web admin Page, i.e.:


http://10.4.168.65/MicroStrategy/asp/Admin.aspx

2. Go to the Default properties option located on the left side menu 
3. Check what’s the option you have selected in the Project list under Login. If you have “Log in, then show the projects accessible by the supplied login” option, please change it to “Show all the projects connected to the Web Server before the user logs in”. 
4. Click on Save 
5. desktop 10.8. 
6. Go to File ->Preferences -> Server Connections 
7. Add the following in the Server URL field, i.e.:

http://10.4.168.65/MicroStrategy/asp/Main.aspx

 
8. Click on the test and save changes. You should see a message saying “10.4.168.65 has been saved successfully” 
Click ok 
9. Go to Server-> Import or Download Dashboard or Add datasets. 
10. You will be prompted to select the project, and then you should be able to select either LDAP or Standard authentication to log in, and it will work fine.
