Unable to Change Shape Fill Color on a Bar Graph when using a Derived Element in a Dossier in MicroStrategy Web 10.10

Community Admin

• Strategy

Within MicroStrategy Web 10.10, some of our users have been experiencing issues with the shape fill color on a bar graph. When users create a bar graph when using a derived element in the dossier, it appears the shape fill color will not change within the dossier itself. For example, the user might change a fill color for the attribute region (containing derived elements of NorthEast, etc.) within the color selector. However, when attempting to make the change, the color of the element is not reflected. Continue reading to learn more!

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

Unable to Change Shape Fill Color on a Bar Graph when using a Derived Element in a Dossier in Strategy Web 10.10
Within Strategy Web 10.10, some of our users have been experiencing issues with the shape fill color on a bar graph. Steps to Reproduce

  1. Create a Base Report in Strategy Tutorial project.
  2. Make sure the Report has Month, Region, and Revenue.
  3. Create derived elements for the Region attribute
  4. Create a New Dossier using the base report as a dataset.
  5. Create a new bar chart.
  6. Add Month to the horizontal axis.
  7. Next, add Revenue to the Vertical Axis.
  8. Add Region to the Color By.
  9. Right-click a derived element in the Bar Chart > Shape Fill Color.
  10. Change the color to any other color.
  11. Notice the change of color for the element is not reflected in the dossier.

Why is this happening?
This is a known defect in Strategy 10.10 specific to the use of a derived element in a bar chart dossier. The Strategy development team is currently working to resolve the issue with the shape fill color.
Status

ACKNOWLEDGED   IN-PROGRESS   SOLVED  (Version: TBD)
Currently this issue is being reviewed by Strategy for a potential code fix in an upcoming Strategy release.
Make sure to check back with this KB article later to get all the latest updates!

Next Steps
For a workaround in the meantime, please follow the steps below:

  • Create the derived elements inside the dossier instead of the base dataset.
  • Create a Custom Group (either from Web or from Developer), then add the custom group to your base report.
