KB441143: How to select Google BigQuery Tables by their namespaces via data import in Web in MicroStrategy 10.10 and 10.11

Joe Vitale

Manager, Cloud Support • MicroStrategy

When doing a data import in Web with Google BigQuery via an ODBC DSN or DSNless connection and attempting to select tables via their namespace, the namespace text box is not available. When selecting a table with multiple namespaces, it defaults to a particular namespace that isn't necessary the desired one.

SYMPTOM
When doing a data import in Web with Google BigQuery via an ODBC DSN or DSNless connection and attempting to select tables via their namespace, the namespace textbox is not available. When selecting a table with multiple namespaces, it defaults to a particular namespace that isn't necessarily the one the customer wants to use.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1) Create a Google BigQuery ODBC connection.
2) Create the DB Instance by using above ODBC connection
3) Point DB Instance to Project.
4) Login into Web and access the Project
5) Select Add External Data -> google BigQuery Driver -> Select tables
6) Notice namespace search box is missing

CAUSE
This is a known issue in Strategy 10.10 and 10.11.

ACTION
Strategy has scoped a fix for this issue in the next platform release 11.0.

WORKAROUND
Edit the DATABASE.PDS file with a text editor. The DATABASE.PDS file can be found in file path C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Strategy. In the text editor, search “Google BigQuery” until you find this line ”<DSSOBJECT TYPE="DBMS" NAME="Google BigQuery" ID="@dbms162">” which should signify Google BigQuery’s property sets. Scroll down slightly until you find the property “CatalogCacheMode”. You need only change this property from a 2 to a 3 in order to select tables by their namespaces.
