KB441302: Device side governing limits for MicroStrategy Mobile App

Ajitpal Raina

Quality Architect, Senior - Director • MicroStrategy

This knowledge base article describes the kinds of governing limits that exist for the Mobile App, and how to detect which limits were hit for a specific case.

KB441302
In order to maintain the stability of the mobile app (avoid crashes due to memory overload), certain memory governors exist on the Strategy Mobile app itself. These governors depend on the types of device (phone vs tablet), as well as the version of the device (newer devices have larger limits).
While we'll not go into details of the exact types of governors and values for each, we'll quickly summarize the big picture for everyone in this article.
Three major types of governing exists as far as the Mobile app is concerned
1. Definition size - The maximum definition size of the document to be run on the mobile app.
2. Runtime size - The maximum run time memory consumed when rendering a particular screen.
3. Max. Data slice size - The maximum slice of data that can be downloaded on the App over the network at a time.
Typically, when you hit a governor, the error message you see will look something like this

When you go through the device logs, you'll see the corresponding error message for the type of governor hit.

The case above hit the run time size limit. The log also shows what the limit for the particular device is. You'll similarly see the errors for definition and data size hits as well. One can then modify the document design to reduce definition and data components accordingly, to make sure the document runs fine on the given device.
