KB441343: When configuring Apache Tomcat to run as a service MicroStrategy Web performs slowly

Darren Burns

Senior Cloud Support Engineer III • MicroStrategy

This Knowledge Base Article describes an identified issue where MicroStrategy Web begins to perform slowly when Tomcat is installed as a Service

Symptom
After Apache Tomcat has been configured as a service, Strategy Web’s performance is notably lower than prior to Tomcat’s configuration as a service.
Steps to Reproduce

  1. Install and configure Tomcat as a Windows Service on a server machine
  2.  Execute the service.bat batch file located in the bin folder of the Apache Tomcat home directory.

Default Location:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Strategy\Tomcat\apache-tomcat-8.0.30\bin

  1. Restart Tomcat
  2. Navigate to Strategy Web and Execute documents
  3. Note the decrease in Performance

Cause
This is working as designed, as Tomcat will reset the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) Heap Space after installing as a service to the default value which can be as low as 356MB to 512MB depending on the version of Apache Tomcat.
Action
Increase the JVM Heap Space to a more appropriate value based on the server’s available resources.
Refer to KB10384 for instructions on how to increase the JVM Heap space for Apache Tomcat.

The Strategy Internal Reference Number for this issue is: KB ID KB441343
