KB441562: In MicroStrategy Secure Enterprise 10.x, how to build an alert-based subscription to identify interruption in Statistics logging

Mari Sugimura

Senior Cloud Support Engineer III • MicroStrategy

This article provides steps to build alert-based subscription that helps Administrator to monitor Statistics logging without manually querying the tables.

Strategy Enterprise Manager is a powerful tool providing the ability to monitor and analyze user activities as well as object utilization as long as statistics are collected without any interruption. In some situations such as database connectivity issues, it is possible for Statistics logging to get interrupted or disabled. The articles below explain some scenarios where Statistics logging could get disabled:
KB40873: Statistics logging found disabled from projects after Intelligence Server re-configured again with Strategy Configuration Wizard 10.x
KB8077: ’MsiStatisticsMgr::Init() failed: project=<Project Name>, HR=0x80004005, statistics will be disabled for this project!’ message appears in the DSSErrors.log of Strategy Intelligence Server 9.x and 10.x
In Strategy Secure Enterprise 10.x, an alert mechanism that can alert the Strategy System Administrator about Statistics logging interruption is currently not available. This article suggests one possible approach by creating an alert-based subscription.
STEPS TO CREATE ALERT-BASED SUBSCRIPTION:
1. Create a Freeform SQL report with the following query and define one metric "Count" and two attributes, "Project," and "Server"

SELECT COUNT(*) AS COUNT_ROWS, a11.PROJECTID, a12.IS_PROJ_NAME, a11.SERVERMACHINE
FROM STG_IS_REPORT_STATS a11
RIGHT OUTER Join IS_PROJ a12
ON a11.PROJECTID = a12.IS_PROJ_GUID
WHERE a11.PROJECTID <> ''
GROUP BY a11.PROJECTID, a12.IS_PROJ_NAME, a11.SERVERMACHINE

Note: It is necessary to see how many rows exist in the STG_IS_REPORT_STATS table per project and server. Statistics may be disabled at the server and/or project level. Even when there are statistics collected for one project from one server, there is a chance that the other server (assuming there are two nodes in the cluster) is not collecting statistics.
2. Execute the report in Web and right click on the metric, "Count," and select "Alert" > "Email notification..."

3. Set the condition as "Count Less than or equal to 1," and populate required fields as shown below:

Note: Condition should be "Less than or equal to 1" because SQL joins to the lookup table to show the project name with which, the row count will be at least one even when no records exist in the statistics table.
4. Confirm that the alert email gets sent when the condition is met:

Other things to consider:
This approach is assuming that statistic records were collected at least once for all of the servers and projects. In other words, there will be no row returned if there has been no statistics logged for a given project from a given server. Also, "Project name" may not be available if there has been no successful data load to populate the lookup table (in this case, IS_PROJ).
