KB441668: How to enable DEBUG level in the MicroStrategyLibrary log

Katarzyna Olszewska

Senior Cloud Support Engineer III • MicroStrategy

This knowledge base article describes how to enable DEBUG logging level for MicroStrategyLibrary log.

Description

When encountering issues or unexpected behavior with Strategy Library (e.g. SAML configuration), the default logging level for Strategy LIbrary's logs may not have enough detail to properly investigate. In such scenarios, it may be helpful to enable the DEBUG logging level for Strategy Library. Doing so will allow users to obtain a deeper insight into what is happening within Strategy Library. However, DEBUG logging should be enabled only for troubleshooting purposes, as this type of detailed logging can result in significant performance problems.

Enabling DEBUG logging

  1. Access the machine in which Strategy Library is installed/deployed and browse into the path <Library Folder Path>/WEB-INF/classes
  2. Locate and edit the file logback.xml
  3. Locate the line <logger name="org.springframework" level="ERROR">
  4. On this line, change from level="ERROR" to level="DEBUG"
  5. Save and close the file logback.xml
  6. Restart the Application Server.
  7. Additional logging is added to StrategyLibrary-{appName}.log. By default, StrategyLibrary-StrategyLibrary.log. You can expect the log file to appear in a folder specified under the LOG_HOME property of the logback.xml file, e.g., <property name="LOG_HOME" value="C:/Program Files (x86)/Common Files/MicroStrategy/Log" />.

Once the behavior you're investigating has been reproduced, edit the logback.xml file once again, switching level="DEBUG" back to level="ERROR".
