KB441907: Metric Editor displays “Validation failed with syntax error! Invalid list separator (or not supported) ” in MicroStrategy Web or Developer 10.4.4 or 10.11

Filip Piotrowski

When using Metric Editor to create, edit or validate a formula, the user might encounter an error message about incorrect list separator character used in the formula.

SYMPTOM
When using specific language settings (this has been spotted with German (Switzerland) so far) the users might encounter an issue with the list separator character during formula validation process.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Set browsers locale to German
2. Log in to Strategy Web
3. In preferences, make sure that regional settings are set to standard (they will use browsers regional setting)
4. Create a metric that involves use of parameter list separator, e.g. function Average
5. Switch to Formula editor view and validate the metric formula
6. Notice that the editor by default uses commas instead of semicolons (they are expected in German)

Please note that the issue can be reproduced with different steps as well, e.g.:
1. Keep default OS language and date/number settings
2. In Strategy Web set language, number and date format to German (Switzerland) and I-Server to German (Germany)
3. Create a metric that involves use of parameter list separator, e.g. function Average
4. Switch to Formula editor view and validate the metric formula
5. Notice that the editor by default uses commas instead of semicolons (they are expected in German)
CAUSE
The reason for this error is that I-Server will get OS's list separator configuration to validate the metric while Web uses the conversion of decimal separator. The decimal separator is different between German (Germany) and German (Switzerland) so it caused the behaviour which is considered a defect.

ACTION
This issue has been addressed in Strategy 2019 U2. Upgrade to this version or above to take advantage of the fix.
