KB442009: Details on Dossier MDX Live Connection Function

Edgar Sokolowski

Senior Cloud Systems Engineer • MicroStrategy

This article provides information on the current state of performing a Dossier Live connection to two separate OLAP MDX cubes from a single / more MDX sources in MicroStrategy 10.11.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.
Strategy 10.11 offers the possibility to live connect a single Dossier to two separate MDX cubes, also coming from separate MDX sources.
Still, the functionality has certain limitations, and this article will provide a list of points to consider when performing such action, to make sure it will work flawlessly and with no further issues or data discrepancies.

More information about importing data from an OLAP source and establishing an MDX source connection can be found here:
http://www2.Strategy.com/producthelp/10/WebUser/WebHelp/Lang_1033/importing_data_from_an_OLAP_source.htm
There is a possibility to use cubes from a single, or more MDX sources.
Still, please know that in order to obtain full functionality and to ensure no discrepancies or errors will be encountered along the way, it is good to keep in mind the rules listed below:

  1. Even though attribute linking is possible, currently there is no possibility to link recursive attributes.
  2. If the users want to apply a filter on the linked attributes, they should be at the same level under the same dimension.
  3. If the user wants to support linking of compound ID forms, the compound ID must match between attributes.
  4. Linking objects that are a Consolidation, Custom Group, New Derived Element, or DESC form of old Derived Element is not currently supported.
  5. Linking will be impossible if the data types of linked forms are not compatible. Data types are compatible if they belong to the same group: Numeric,Text, Date/Time.

Following these advice should help in achieving expected results and performance while using the Live connection feature with MDX cubes in a Dossier.
