KB442480: When exporting dossiers to PDF in MicroStrategy 11.x, the following error may occur: "Navigation Timeout Exceeded"

Justin Parks

Principal Product Specialist • MicroStrategy

The following KB article documents the cause of navigation timeout exceeded when exporting vi/dossier to PDF in MicroStrategy 11.x - 2019. A workaround is provided.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.
SYMPTOM
Starting with the release of Strategy 11.0, the PDF Export Engine service now uses puppeteer instead of phantomjs as the headless browser to print results to PDF. In some scenarios, users may be presented with the following error:

ka0PW0000001JVQYA2_0EM44000000RbkF.png

PDF Exporting is terminated due to an internal error. Failed to open HTML template. Navigation Timeout Exceeded: 30000ms exceeded.

CAUSE
The cause of this failure is due to a default timeout in puppeteer's page.goto function. If it takes more than 30 seconds to load the page the failure will occur.
ACTION
The timeout is not controllable in Strategy 11.0. However, in Strategy 2019 the timeout is controllable through the following setting in the application.properties file:

exporter.renderer.resource.timeout

Aside from controlling the timeout, there could be additional options to help speed up page loads. Users should make sure they work with their Web/System administrators to verify other options have been covered before increasing resource timeouts to resolve the issue.
