Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION
Dynamic sourcing does not work in VI Dashboard/ Dossier when selecting objects from the "Browse all objects" dataset option
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1.Create a simple cube with a few objects
2. Turn Dynamic Sourcing on at the cube and project level
3. Create a new VI Dashboard
4. Select objects from the cube via the "Browse all objects" dataset option
5. Notice the objects were sourced from the database instead of the cube by checking the database job monitor.
CAUSE
Strategy does not support dynamic sourcing with Live-to-Schema datasets. The "Browse All Objects" feature in the Strategy 2019 platform release has been removed after evaluating numerous feedback that creating "Live to Schema" datasets via this workflow posed several usability issues. For example, self-service users could end up drag-and-dropping very heavy Attributes into their visualizations, or causing cross-joins, thus causing stress on the Data Warehouse. Creating datasets using Project Schema Attributes and Metrics from within VI (now called Dossier Authoring) is still possible, however, users must follow a slightly different workflow. That is, they should go to Add Data > Existing Objects, select Attributes, and Metrics, then select the connection mode: In-Memory or Live Connection. The latter is the option that provides the same dataset behavior as "Browse All Objects" did in v 10.4
To clarify, when I mentioned "Live-to-Schema" datasets, this is the kind of dataset that resulted from adding objects from the "Browse all objects" panel in version 10.4.X. The same "Live-to-Schema" behavior can be achieved in Strategy 2019, as mentioned prior, by creating the dataset via Add Data > Existing Objects, and selecting the "Live Connection" option in the drop-down at the bottom of the Existing Objects dialog.
In neither version is Dynamic Sourcing supported with "Live-to-Schema" datasets, nor is it in the plans to be supported in the future.
WORKAROUND
For self-service scenarios, best practice would be to instruct users to use the "Create New Report" option with the desired Attributes and Metrics when attempting to dynamically source from a cube within a VI Dashboard/ Dossier.
