KB442549: Changing data type from double to integer in preview page causes imported column data empty

This issue has been classified as a defect by MicroStrategy. The impact is limited to MicroStrategy 10.3.x and above when changing data type from double to integer in preview page. A couple of workarounds are available in the current document. A code fix for this issue is not available in current releases but is being reviewed for a future MicroStrategy release.

Starting with the release of Strategy ONE (March 2024), dossiers are also known as dashboards.

Symptom 


In Strategy 10.3.x, changing data type from double to integer in preview page causes imported column data empty. 
 

Reproduction steps

  1. Import a csv file which includes a double column.

  • In the Preview page, right click on the number column. The column is detected as Double.

  1. Click Wrangle link in the left-top corner and do any wrangling operations. In this case, just change the number column name from “large” to “value”. And then apply the wrangling operations and exit to Preview page.

  1. In the Preview page, right click the number column header again, and change its type to Integer. This will trigger Data Truncation.

  1. After changing the data type, finish and publish the cube, and then create a Dossier with it. In the Dossier, add the columns into the grid, and then the number column is shown as empty cells.

Cause


This is a known defect in 10.3.x and above.
 
Strategy highly recommend not to change a column type from a larger type to a smaller type.
In the Preview page of Data import, a column type can be changed by right clicking on the column header and selecting “Change Data Type”. In the “Change Data Type” menu, the detected column type is checked in default, and other types can be selected so that the column type can be changed if the detected type is not correct.
Since different types has different value ranges and formats, changing a column from one type to another may not always work as expected. For example, converting Double or Float values to Integer will lose decimal part of the values, and the changed results may not always be the expected values as double values can be much larger the maximum value that Integer type can represent.
Changing column type from a larger type to a smaller type is called “Data Truncation”.

This has been fixed in Strategy 2020. Please upgrade to take advantage of the fix.
 
 

Workaround


 
Avoid this issue in the following ways:

  1. Change Data Type can be done when Data Wrangling is not required. But the result is not guaranteed.
  2. When Data Wrangling is required, import the data as float or double type, and then create a metric with Round function to get rid of the decimal part of the values. This will give more predictable values than Changing Data Type.
