KB44321: MicroStrategy Cube Advisor creates unnecessary additional metrics when Create Cube Design is used

MicroStrategy Cube Advisor creates unnecessary additional metrics when Create Cube Design is used

SYMPTOM:

The Strategy Cube Advisor creates unnecessary metrics when using the 'Create Cube Design' process, making the metadata bigger than needed.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

1. Configure Diagnostics for Dynamic Sourcing Component and enable Metric Levels Log.
2. Select the System Log check box and provide a file name for the log file for example, MetricLog
3. Restart Intelligence Server.

4. Log into Developer and run all the reports in the following folder: Public Objects\Reports\Subject Areas\Supplier Analysis. For any prompted report, leave the default answer selected.

5. Open Cube Advisor
6. On the Tools menu select Options and provide the path to the MetricLog file in step #2.
7. Leave the Enterprise Manager field blank and clear the other two check boxes if selected.
8. In Cube Advisor, on the Logon screen, enter the Computer Name for your Intelligence Server, provide the User and Password anc click Connect. When the projects display select Strategy Tutorial and click Connect to Project.
9. Browse to Public Objects\Reports\Subject Areas and enable the check box for Supplier Analysis folder.
10. Click Get Cube Recommendations.
11. Cube Advisor will recommend 3 Cubes.
12. Click Create Cube Design.
13. Save to My Reports folder.

14. Once completed, go to Developer and look in My Reports folder and Cube 2 and Cube 3 folders. You will see addtional metrics.

CAUSE:

Since the existing report metric level and expected level differ, Dynamic Sourcing doesn't identify the existing report metric to be used in the desired cube recommendation.  Ideally, Dynamic Sourcing could look at the expression of the report metric and the desired metric in the cube. If they are same, it can include it in recommendation and avoid creating new metrics with the same expression.
