KB44569: An attribute element that contains an ampersand will loop back to its attribute when navigating down the hierarchy through the object browser in tree view in MicroStrategy Web 9.3.x

Community Admin

• Strategy

In MicroStrategy Web 9.3.x, when browsing a hierarchy in the object browser and expanding on an element that contains an ampersand, the next attribute on the hierarchy will show no elements except for repetitions of itself.  There is still the option to drill down in the hierarchy more, but the user will notice the hierarchy will keep repeating the attribute

SYMPTOM:
In Strategy Web 9.3.x, when browsing a hierarchy in the object browser and expanding on an element that contains an ampersand, the next attribute on the hierarchy will show no elements except for repetitions of itself.  There is still the option to drill down in the hierarchy more, but the user will notice the hierarchy will keep repeating the attribute as shown below.

The issue was confirmed in Firefox v22, Google Chrome v28.x, and Internet Explorer 9 and 10.  The same browsing path works fine under Strategy Desktop 9.3.x.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
Using Strategy Tutorial Project, perform the following steps:

  1. Create a new Attribute.
  2. In the New Attribute (ID) window, create the below form expression from the LU_SUBCATEG source table:
    Sample Code/Error
  3. Set it to Manual.
  4. Set the Source Tables to LU_SUBCATEG.
  5. Make sure the form's format type is Text and the Form Category is ID.
  6. Save the attribute as Subcategory 2 and close.
  7.  Create a second new attribute.
  8. In the New Attribute (ID) window, create the below form expression from the LU_ITEM source table:
    Sample Code/Error
  9. Set it to Manual.
  10. Set the Source Tables to LU_ITEM.
  11. Make sure the form's format type is Text and the Form Category is ID.
  12. Save the attribute as Item 2 and close.
  13. Open up Strategy Architect 9.3.x.
  14. Create a new Hierarchy named 'Test Hierarchy'.
  15. Add the attributes Subcategory 2 and Item 2, created in steps 6 and 12.
  16. Set Subcategory 2 as an entry point.
  17. Make Item 2 the child of Subcategory 2.
  18. Save and update the schema, then close Strategy Architect.
  19. In Strategy Desktop 9.3.x, navigate to the Schema Objects > Hierarchies folder.
  20. Drag the Test Hierarchy into the Data Explorer folder.
  21. Make a shortcut to the Test Hierarchy in the Schema Objects > Hierarchies folder.
  22. In Strategy Web 9.3.x create a new report.
  23. Under the object browser panel, switch to tree view.
  24. Navigate down to the Hierarchies.
  25. Expand Test Hierarchy.
  26. Expand the Subcategory 2 attribute.
  27. Expand the Arts & Architecture element.
  28. Expand the Item 2 attribute. Notice that another Item 2 attribute shows. It will keep expanding to show only Item 2 under the previous Item 2.
