KB44610: Aggregation nulls (--) are returned for all rows for a metric whose custom subtotal is set to (None) and this custom subtotal is selected in the page-by in MicroStrategy Developer 9.x.

Aggregation nulls (--) are returned for all rows for a metric whose custom subtotal is set to (None) and this custom subtotal is selected in the page-by in MicroStrategy Developer 9.x

SYMPTOM:

A user may wish not to show the subtotal for a given metric, creating a custom subtotal and setting that metric's custom subtotal to (None). When that same custom subtotal is also selected in the report's page-by, aggregation nulls, represented as '--' by default, are returned in all rows for that metric.

CAUSE:

This is expected behavior. When a subtotal is selected in a report's page-by, all result rows are grouped according to how the subtotal is defined. Since the metric's custom subtotal is set to (None), the grouping is also none, which cannot be used in dynamic aggregation. Therefore, aggregation nulls are returned.

ACTION:

For the custom subtotal, set Applied levels > By position > Pages: None in order to remove the option to select the custom total in the page-by.

WORKAROUND:

If a 'Total' is desired for all elements in the page-by, a Consolidation or Custom Group element  can be created for each attribute element , plus one Consolidation element that includes all of that attribute's elements.
