KB44699: “Execute Query failed...[ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Operation must use an updateable query" error message appears when connecting onto a 2-Tier project source pointing to the default Enterprise Manager metadata

Community Admin

• Strategy

This technical note documents an error that occurs when connecting in 2-tier mode to an Enterprise Manager metadata.

NOTE:
According to the Strategy Upgrade Guide - Chapter 3: Section: Updating your Enterprise Manager Project, there are three ways to update the Enterprise Manager Metadata (Project):

  • Upgrading and replacing the Enterprise Manager project
  • Updating an existing Enterprise Manager project
  • Including new features in your custom Enterprise Manager environment

In order to perform the third one, a 2-Tier connection to the out-of-the-box Enterprise Manager Metadata must be created. This Metadata comes by default in a Microsoft Access file. For further reference about this subject, check the referred Strategy manual.

SYMPTOM:
In Strategy Developer 9.x - 10.x, the following error message is thrown when connecting to the out-of-the-box Enterprise Manager Metadata in 2-Tier:

Error Type: Odbc error. Odbc operation attempted:
SQLExecDirect. Operation must use an updateable query.

CAUSE:
This issue occurs due to the logged operational system user does not have enough permission on the out-of-the-box Enterprise Manager Metadata that is available by default at C:\Program Files (x86)\MicroStrategy\Enterprise Manager.

ACTION:
Grant full permission to the logged operational system user on the referred Microsoft Access file. If this issue persists, please refer to the following Technical notes for further information on a similar issue based on the same error message: KB11360 - "Operation must use an updateable query" error message appears when attempting to connect to a project source pointing to the shipped Microsoft Access metadata in Strategy Enterprise Manager 9.x.
