KB44803: JavaScript error "Descriptor with id 2948 not found" message appears when a user searches without inserting search criteria in MicroStrategy Web 9.3.1

This article details a known defect when a user searches without inserting search criteria in Microstrategy Web 9.3.1

SUMMARY:
This issue has been classified as a defect by Strategy. The impact is limited to Strategy Web 9.3.1 product and only when the Start Page is set to 'Summary'. Users will find that issue will show only when the 'Search Field' has been left blank and will not hinder operation. There are currently 3 workarounds to not see this error. 
 
SYMPTOM:
In Strategy Web 9.3.1, if a user tries to search with an empty search bar, they are presented with a JavaScript error at the top of the page.
 
 
Upon clicking on the error, they will be presented with the following details:
 
 
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
 
Set the User Start Page to Summary
 
 
Go to Start Page
 
 
Click on Search Bar and hit 'Enter' key
 
 
The user will then see the above mentioned JavaScript error notification at the top of their screen.
 
 
CAUSE:
This issue occurs if the Search Bar is empty when searching from the 'Start Page'. This issue has been classified as a defect in Strategy Web 9.3.1. 
ACTION:
Currently this issue is has been fixed in 9.3.1 Hot Fix 3. Please upgrade to Hot Fix to resolve this issue.
 
WORKAROUND:
There are currently 3 workarounds to not see this error.
 
The first is to not use 'Summary' as the Start Page. This issue will not occur in the other modes.
 
 
The second is to not leave the search bar empty when searching from the 'Start Page' in 'Summary' mode.
 
 
The third is to disable the 'Search Bar' on the 'Start Page' via SDK. Please see TN43748 - How to Remove the Search Box from the Top of the Home Screen using Strategy Web SDK 9.3.0 and 9.3.1 for more information on how to perform this.
 
ADDITIONAL TROUBLESHOOTING:
If the workaround steps above do not resolve the issue, please consider calling Strategy Technical Support with the following files:

  • 9.3.1 WAR File
  • Plugin or Customization to disable this feature

This will allow Technical Support to test and verify the issue is the same.
