KB45016: "ERROR: value too long for type character varying(4000)" appears when upgrading a PostgreSQL metadata to MicroStrategy 9.x or 10.x

"ERROR: value too long for type character varying(4000)" appears when upgrading a PostgreSQL metadata to MicroStrategy 9.x or 10.x

SYMPTOM:
Whenever upgrading a PostgreSQL 9.1 or up metadata to Strategy 9.x or 10.x within the Strategy Configuration Wizard the following error is received and the upgrade fails.

"ERROR: value too long for type character varying(4000)"

Additionally, the error can be seen when configuring the Strategy Intelligence Server to a PostgreSQL 9.1 or up metadata with Strategy.

CAUSE:
This is caused by a change in a default setting in Postgres that started in version 9.1. With 9.1 standard_conforming_strings was defaulted to on. This works by automatically escaping out backslashes in strings. This however increases the length of the string and causes the error seen.

ACTION:
Currently this issue is being reviewed by Strategy for a potential code fix on an upcoming Strategy release.

WORKAROUND:
This issue can be worked around in one of two ways. Option 1 is to set standard_conforming_strings to off in the database configuration. Option 2 is to downgrade the PostgreSQL metadata server to a 9.0.x version which will allow the upgrade to proceed successfully.
