KB45160: How to configure a grid to pass the element selected on it to a target document using Edit Links in MicroStrategy Mobile 9.x and 10.x

Community Admin

• Strategy

It is possible to configure an attribute on a grid to behave both as a selector and as Edit Links. In this configuration, it is possible to select an element on the grid and pass the selected element to another document using this method in MicroStrategy Web 9.x and 10.x, however in MicroStrategy Mobile 9.x and 10.x, tapping the element only manipulates the targets within the same document, and there doesn't seem to be a way to execute the link.

SYMPTOM
It is possible to configure an attribute on a grid to behave both as a selector and as Edit Links. In this configuration, it is possible to select an element on the grid and pass the selected element to another document using this method in Strategy Web 9.x and 10.x, however in Strategy Mobile 9.x and 10.x, tapping the element only manipulates the targets within the same document, and there doesn't seem to be a way to execute the link.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE

  • Create a document with 2 grids using the Year attribute on both.
  • Make one of the grids target the other grid using the Year attribute as a selector.
  • Also configure the Year attribute from the same grid with Edit Links using the instructions in tech note KB44090: Passing all selector values across Report Services Documents using Edit Links to target another document and pass the selection to the other selectors.
Note: The target document should have a selector on the same Year attribute that targets a grid with the same Year attribute, as below:

  • Execute the source document in Strategy Web.
  • Click an element on the grid as selector to make sure it drives the target grid.
  • Now right click the element to reveal the context menu and show the available Edit Links options, like shown below.

  • Note: Intuitively, users should expect this same work flow to work in Strategy Mobile.
  • Execute the source document in Strategy Mobile.
  • Select an element on the grid.
  • Long-tap the element to reveal the Edit Links options.
Note: There is no menu that presents itself for optional links to use.

CAUSE
This is working as designed. The work flow in Strategy Mobile for linking documents when using grids as selectors and Edit Links is different.
ACTION

  • Instead of long-tapping the element to reveal linking options, make the selection of the element, then click the header for the attribute. In this instance, click the "Year" header, like shown below.

  • Note: Users are now linked to the target document and the highlighted element passed will be passed.
