When does a Strategy user need an ESRI key needed?
Great question! To help you better understand the ESRI key process, we're going to break down three different scenarios.
First, we have ESRI Public Maps.
For ESRI Public Maps, the user does not need an ESRI key if they want to build or create a new map. Users will not face any issues in map authoring without a key if using Public ESRI maps, but they will miss out on some of our customized map components that Strategy offers out of the box (i.e. ability to easily create area maps). If the user decides to use ESRI Public maps, they will be able to bring the maps into Strategy if they wish.
Second, we have the Strategy ESRI Cloud Offering.
With Strategy's Cloud offering, users will need a key from Strategy. This key is free for users, but they'll need to reach out to the Technical Support team to get everything up and running. If you need help learning more about how to activate our Cloud-based maps for Strategy Web products, check out this article.
Lastly, users might want to use the ESRI ArcGIS Local Server.
For this last option, users will want to have ESRI on-premise. They set up their own ESRI ArcGIS Server to have everything up. This is the only option where the user will need to purchase (only time they will have to purchase a key) and retrieve their own ESRI key to modify the esriconfig.xml file.
If you have any additional questions, please feel free to reach out to Support.
