When exporting a document with Unicode characters to PDF, the characters are not display correctly in MicroStrategy Web.

SYMPTOM:

When users try to export a document with Unicode characters (e.g., Japanese, Chinese) to PDF in Strategy Web 9.x, the characters are not displayed correctly. The characters are either missing from the export or are replaced with boxes even though they are displayed correctly when exported to Microsoft Excel.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. Create a document using a font that has Unicode characters (e.g., Japanese).
  2. Export the document to PDF from Strategy Web and notice that the characters will be replaced by boxes as shown below.

Exporting the same document to Microsoft Excel displays the characters correctly as shown below.

CAUSE:

The font specified for these characters does not support Unicode characters. The user is able to see the fonts displayed correctly in web and is able to export them successfully to Microsoft Excel because they are Unicode compatible.

ACTION:

  1. Open the document in edit mode on Strategy Web.
  2. Select the textbox or grid in which the characters are displayed.
  3. Select the Format > Properties and Formatting.
  4. Locate the Font settings
  5. From the list of fonts select a Unicode Font that supports the characters that the user is trying to export . Arial Unicode MS was used as the font for this demonstration.
