KB45452: "Report '<name>' can not be executed with its current structure. A report should not be defined in terms of itself." error message appears when adding or removing a metric in a report.

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

SYMPTOM:

When trying to add or remove a metric from a report definition in Strategy 9.x, the following error message occurs:

Report '<Report Name>' can not be executed with its current structure. A report should not be defined in terms of itself.

CAUSE:

This can be caused by a metric having a circular reference.  For example, the following compound metric is defined in terms of itself through one of its component metrics:

Strategy will only validate the syntax of a single metric definition.  Therefore, if a change in metric definition causes a circular reference in another metric, both metrics will still be validated.  However, the metric with the circular reference will not be able to be executed in reports or be added or removed from reports until this circular reference is broken.

ACTION:

Alter the definition of the underlying metric so that the circular reference does not exist anymore.  Verify in the higher-level metric that none of its component metrics have a circular reference.
