KB45455: "Out of stack space" error occurs when opening a metric editor, validating a metric or inserting an additional metric to a metric definition in MicroStrategy 9.x.

Stefan Zepeda

Salesforce Solutions Architect • Strategy

"Out of stack space" error occurs when opening a metric editor, validating a metric or inserting an additional metric to a metric definition in MicroStrategy 9.x.

SYMPTOM:

When a user tries to open a metric editor of a new metric, the following error occurs in Strategy 9.x:

Out of stack space

This error message also occurs in some instances when validating a compound metric or inserting another metric to the definition, causing Strategy Developer to crash.
CAUSE:

This issue is most likely caused by a metric containing a circular reference.  In the following example, Sum of Cost is defined in terms of Calculated Profit and calculated profit is defined in terms of Sum of Cost.  This is an invalid reference.

Strategy will only validate the syntax of a single metric definition. Therefore, if a change in metric definition causes a circular reference in another metric, both metrics will still be validated independently.  However, there are some instances while trying to resolve the metric definition where Strategy will enter an infinite loop until this error occurs.  This will happen if the metric with the circular definition is inserted as a part of another metric definition.  This will also occur if the metric is duplicated (through copy/paste) and the user attempts to enter the new metric editor.

ACTION:

Alter the definition of one of the offending metrics so that the circular definition is broken.
